Gulets
A Gulet is a wooden motor sailing vessel,
the modern version of the ancient cargo bearing craft which used to trade along
the coast of Turkey. The original design has evolved into a comfortable
cruising vessel and some have air conditioned accommodation for up to eighteen
guests in self-contained double cabins.
The cabins are usually for two (double beds not twin beds). All of the
cabins have enough storage room for your belongings. Each cabin has a
separate toilet with wash basin and shower providing modern facilities
and privacy. The gulets offer enough space to the passengers in the cabins,
in the aisles and on the deck.
Gulets are traditional boats of Southwest Turkey. In general, gulets vary
in length between 16 and 35 meters hence varying passenger capacity.
In many ways a Gulet is like a full service hotel where every room has a sea
view and the scenery changes constantly.
The Turkish “Gulet” is a
traditionally designed wooden motor sailor. She has the heritage of those
ancient boats which sailed across the Aegean and Mediterranean seas for
thousands of years.
The traditional wooden yachts are built mainly
in Bodrum and other parts of Southwest Turkey. In Northern Black Sea Region
the boat yards usually built fishing boats, but some beautiful traditional
yachts are being constructed recently. These boats built handmade by local
carpenters. They use generally pine or oak wood for the skeleton of the boats,
the skeleton cover is made of pine or tetra, the deck teak, the cabins pine
or mahagony, the masts white oak wood or iron. The boats are both motor and
sailing yachts. Yacht charters take place on comfortable, locally built
wooden yachts of several designs and sizes:
Gulet: The most popular type of traditional yacht for
the 'Blue Cruise' is the gullet. It is a cruising yacht with large, rounded
stern area which is well-suited for comfartable eating and lounging. Gulets
usually have ketch (marconi) or schooner-rigging, with one, two or three
foresails. Their lenghts change between 15 to 33 meters and they accommodate
6 to 16 persons in 3 to 8 double bedded cabins with private shower and WC.
Aynakic: It has a raised, squared-off stern that allows space
for additional cabins below compared to a gullet. There may be a large master
cabin at the stern. They accommodate 8 to 24 persons in 4 to 12 double bedded
cabins with private shower and WC. They are generally ketch (marconi)-rigging
and measure 18 to 33 meters.
Tirhandil: It is the oldest type of local wooden boat with a pointed
stern which is suited best for sailing in Aegean waters. Originally most had
lateen sails; now the rigging varies from sloop to cutter to gaff. They normally
measure between 11 to 18 meters in lenght and accommodate 6 to 8 persons
in 3 to 4 double bedded cabins with private shower and WC. Modern yachts
are chartered either with crew or without crew.
Broker
Why use a broker to help you buy a boat Yacht Brokers
work like real estate agents. We are agents whom people consult
to find and purchase a boat, and whom people hire to list,
represent, and sell boats for them.Traditionally,
the seller pays the commissions that a yacht broker earns -
not the buyer, yet brokers have a duty to both
buyer and seller in every transaction.
The brokers role for the buyer
The initial inquiry
- A professional broker will listen closely to your wants and needs
and will help you determine if the boat you are calling on is right boat for you at
the best value. They can objectively tell you about the condition of the vessel before
you decide whether or not to spend your time to look at the boat. Broker will help you
determine if there are similar boats on the market, the history of the yacht, how long
it has been on the market, and the motivation of the seller. Anyone can look up asking
prices on boats, but it takes a professional broker to have an intimate knowledge of
current market conditions, a familiarity of similar boats, and information on recent sale prices.
Making an offer on a pre-owned boat -
A professional broker can help their buyer decide on a realistic offer that
increases the chances of buying a pre-owned boat for a fair and reasonable price,
and with the necessary elements to protect your interests. Your broker prepares
an Offer to Purchase for your signature. It should spell out the terms of the
sale including obligations that you and the seller have agreed to, and when these
obligations will be fulfilled. You also make a good-faith deposit on the boat,
usually placed in escrow, and subject to sea trial and survey.
Making an offer on a new boat -
Dealers taking trade-ins will inform you of tax issues and tax savings associated
with the trade-in. Price negotiations may include making your new boat available
to show to other dealership clients in the future. Depending on whether the vessel
is custom built, semi-custom, or a production model, there is usually a basic cost,
plus transportation expenses from the builder to the dealership, plus optional
equipment and installation.
Paperwork -
Professional brokers and dealers are familiar with all the paper work requirements
for their country, state or province, from the initial Offer to Purchase and Bill
of Sale to licensing and registration; or documentation and titling, to paying
tax and other fees, as well as certificates of ownership, security agreements, and other
documents needed to complete a sale. Professionals will understand maritime and admiralty
liens for the type of vessels they represent, as well as agency contracts, listing agreements,
closing statements, deposit requirements and escrowed accounts to safeguard funds.
Sea trial and Survey -
The buyer of a pre-owned vessel will usually request a sea trial and the services
of a marine surveyor. Buyers pay for the surveys and for hauling the boat out
of the water for inspection. Your yacht broker will usually attend the sea trial
and marine survey with you, and help you determine how to properly address the
nearly inevitable yacht survey issues and put the problems in context. They can
help estimate time and cost of correcting, and where to obtain accurate quotes
for items that are unfamiliar. Your lender and insurance carrier will usually
require a copy of the survey.
The art of negotiating the deal -
The broker can use his position as a middleman to keep the negotiations between
buyer and seller moving to a successful conclusion.
Safeguard funds -
A professional broker will use an escrow account for clients' funds, and ensure
that at closing, any existing loan or other encumbrances is paid off. This safeguard
is of critical importance to the buyer and seller, and can be a potentially serious
hazard in a private transaction not involving a broker.
After the sale -
Your broker and dealer can help you find moorage and yacht maintenance and repair
specialists or facilities. They can refer you to classes on sailing, boat handling
and seamanship, Their experience in local waters can help you chart a course for
great day, weekend or longer trips. They can connect you with boat clubs, races and
rendevous sponsored by builders and dealerships. Plus, you've got a new boating friend for life.

Building gulets in Bodrum is as old as the town, going back some 2500 years.
History records that Artemisia, the ruler of Caria, commanded her own naval
squadron in the battle of Salamis in 480 BC, lending credence to the belief that ships
were built in or near the city of Halicarnassus (ancient name of Bodrum).
The seafaring traditions of the Carians and Dorians, who lived together
in Halicarnassus and supplied ships to Egyptian Pharaohs, add weight to the premise
that shipbuilding here is an ancient craft. Late records, from the days of the
Ottoman Empire, show that the galleons for the Ottoman navy are built in Bodrum.
Atlas Yachting is specialized in management of constructing traditional
wooden Turkish gulets. We act as the controller of the gulet construction an material
supply while working with the most experienced local gulet carpenters.
Traditional gulets are built as motorsailor yachts. The wooden material used in
gulet construction are mainly pine, mahagony, oak and white oak. The masts are
made white oak or steel. Mechanical parts are generally imported and well known
brands are prefered. Interior design is built to the needs of the client for either
private or commercial purposes. Depending on the gulet type, size and client's budget
the construction of a gulet may take from 8 months to 24 months.
